Areni Analysis: How Regional Reputations Are Built Through Collective Action
Areni Global’s recent online round table asked the big questions about how regional identity in fine wine is built and maintained.
What distinguishes one region from another?
There are the physical elements like soil type, elevation and climate. But many regions have wonderful soils and climates, yet struggle to be acknowledged in the global marketplace.
How are reputations built — and are there steps people in those regions can take to help the process?
In October 2023, Areni Global convened two round tables on the question, each of which brought together winery owners, winemakers, brand managers and the heads of regional bodies, from both the Old and New Worlds.
The first round table looked at the question of collective responsibility, and how regional players can come together for the common good. The second looked at what individuals can do to develop regional identity.
The round tables were conducted under the Chatham House Rule, in accordance with Areni Global policy: participants are free to use the information discussed, as long as the identity of the speakers is not revealed. Areni Global uses this Rule so that all participants feel comfortable about sharing their knowledge.
