10 Things We Learned About Trade Barriers to The Global Wine Trade – and How to Overcome Them
In October 2023, the OIV came together to discuss the issue of barriers that may be affecting the international wine trade. Areni Global was there to hear the discussion.
The Palais de Ducs in Burgundy has seen many diplomatic meetings in its time. In October, it hosted another one — the OIV World Trade Forum.
The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) is an international agency which acts as a kind of international clearing house for the wine trade, monitoring developments in viticulture, winemaking and associated research, while also disseminating information, and helping to harmonise practices and standards.
This year the OIV discussions centred around the topic of non-tariff measures (NTMs), as they are proliferating, with both direct and indirect impacts to the global wine trade.
As the day unfolded, it became clear that the OIV has a challenge ahead of it; the trade environment is so complex that harmonising it is a Sisyphean task.
